A major milestone in Chelmsford's city centre regeneration has been reached as the newly named Bow Bridge Road officially opened, providing a crucial new link to Chelmer Waterside and paving the way for future development on the city's largest brownfield site.
Delivered on behalf of Chelmsford City Council, the 50-metre bridge enhances connectivity between Parkway and Chelmer Waterside, offering essential access for vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists while maintaining river navigation for boats.
After 18 months of construction, the bridge now acts as a gateway to one of Chelmsford's most ambitious regeneration areas, which is already home to 400 new residences and is set for further development.
Andrew Henry, Contracts Director at GRAHAM, the contractor responsible for delivering the project, said: "We're immensely proud to have successfully delivered this iconic bridge project for Chelmsford City Council. The Chelmer Waterside Bridge showcases our civil engineering expertise and collaborative approach, working integrally with our client, design partner Buro Happold and supply chain to create a structure that is both functional and visually striking.
"The project demonstrates the value of Early Contractor Involvement, which enabled us to develop innovative solutions to technical challenges, particularly around flood risk management and utility diversions. By focusing on efficient design and sustainable construction methods, we've created infrastructure that supports Chelmsford’s vision for urban regeneration while minimising environmental impact.
"This new bridge will serve as a gateway to the Waterside neighbourhood, improving accessibility for vehicles while offering safe and scenic routes for cyclists and pedestrians, all while allowing boats to continue navigating the River Chelmer."
The bridge includes a range of innovative features, such as weathering steel screens designed to manage flood risk while complementing the industrial heritage of the area. The use of parametric modelling helped optimise the design for sustainability, reducing both emissions and costs.
With Bow Bridge Road now open, Chelmer Waterside is poised to enter its next phase of transformation, with new homes, community spaces and improved public access to Chelmsford's network of waterways on the horizon.
