HG Construction has announced a £1.2 million investment in Dumarey Green Power's 'Revolution Battery' technology, following successful trials earlier this year aimed at decarbonising crane and hoist operations across its UK sites.
The investment marks a significant step in HG Construction's drive to reduce emissions and operational costs while advancing more sustainable construction practices. The trials, conducted on HG's Moritsch crane fleet at two London sites, demonstrated substantial benefits in both environmental impact and energy efficiency.
In one of the pilot projects, two Moritsch RTL 195 luffing cranes were powered by a single Revolution Battery using a 32A 3-phase mains supply, replacing two 200 kVA diesel generators that previously ran for 50–60 hours a week.
The results were:
Cost Savings: Weekly energy costs dropped from £1,400 per crane (diesel) to just £80 (mains) – a 94% reduction
Emissions Reduction: CO₂ emissions fell from 3,000 kg per crane per week to under 200 kg – a 93% decrease
Efficiency Gains: The battery system proved quieter, smaller, and more reliable than diesel alternatives
Adam Quinn, CEO of HG Construction, commented: "The performance of the Revolution Battery during the trials was exceptional – reducing carbon emissions and running costs by over 90%. These results speak for themselves and made our decision to invest a straightforward one. The fact that the technology has been developed and produced locally also aligns with our commitment to source from local suppliers where possible. This investment will enable us to make great strides on our journey towards decarbonisation of our operations, improve site efficiency and reduce waste. Looking forward, we remain committed to embracing innovations that deliver tangible environmental and operational benefits."
Unlike traditional battery systems that store large amounts of energy to deliver peak power, the Revolution Battery – an industrial battery energy storage system (BESS) – separates energy storage from power output. This approach allows for high power delivery with minimal stored energy, reducing the number of battery cells required and cutting embedded emissions.
Where mains power is not available, the system can be charged by a 40 kVA generator, which needs to run for less than three hours a day based on trial data.
HG Construction plans to roll out the Revolution Battery across its UK operations as it continues to adopt innovative, low-carbon solutions in construction.
