Road Resurfacing Works To Start In Leicester

Construction News Image
A series of major road resurfacing projects are set to take place across Leicester during the school summer holidays, as part of a £1 million programme aimed at improving the city's road network.

Leicester City Council has scheduled the works during the school break to minimise disruption, taking advantage of the reduced traffic levels. The programme includes temporary road closures and clearly signposted diversions to help manage the flow of vehicles while repairs are carried out.

One of the first schemes will see resurfacing on Stoughton Drive, between Evington Lane and the Gartree roundabout, beginning Saturday 12 July and lasting for eight days. The £240,000 project will involve resurfacing 6,750 square metres of road, with the route closed in both directions during the works.

Further work will take place on Avenue Road Extension in Clarendon Park from Saturday 19 July for up to seven days, affecting the section between Welford Road and Queens Road.

From Saturday 26 July, resurfacing is planned for London Road, between its junctions with Mayfield Road and Evington Road, with work expected to last six days.

The Portwey and Tailby Avenue, between Hastings Road and Uppingham Road, will see repairs begin on Saturday 2 August, also taking six days to complete.

Additional resurfacing is scheduled in August for parts of Wicklow Drive, King Richards Road, Vulcan Road, and Arran Road, with all projects expected to be completed ahead of schools reopening on Tuesday 26 August.

In total, more than 26,000 square metres of road surface will be renewed under the summer programme, which forms part of the council's wider annual highway capital maintenance plan. This year, over £6 million will be invested into improving Leicester’s road infrastructure.

Martin Fletcher, Leicester City Council's director of city highways, said: "With the volume of traffic using the city’s roads, repairs and resurfacing work are necessary to keep the road network in good condition.

"Unfortunately, these works mean temporary road closures and disruption to some drivers, but that is unavoidable.

"We do try to carry out resurfacing and more disruptive roadworks during the school holidays when traffic is considerably reduced and will do all that we can to ensure that work is completed quickly and that roads can reopen on time."
