Watford Colosseum Refurbishment Reaches Practical Completion

The multi-million-pound refurbishment of Watford Colosseum has reached practical completion, with the historic venue now officially handed over to operator AEG Presents UK.

Led by Watford Borough Council and delivered by Morgan Sindall Construction's Northern Home Counties division, the major upgrade is part of the wider Town Hall Quarter regeneration programme.

Originally built in 1938 and renowned for its world-class acoustics, the Grade II listed Colosseum has undergone a sensitive modernisation to restore key architectural features while bringing the venue up to modern standards.

Works included a new stage and lighting rigs, the reopening of the original grand entrance, full bar refurbishment, improved accessibility, updated signage, and extensive interior renovations. Environmental upgrades were also central to the project, with enhanced insulation, modern MEP systems, and rooftop solar panels installed to boost energy efficiency.

Morgan Sindall's Intelligent Solutions approach was key to preserving the building’s acoustics and heritage elements, such as the timber panelling and Art Deco façade, while ensuring the venue meets current sustainability benchmarks.

With the building now handed over, AEG Presents will begin installing new equipment, lighting, and furnishings ahead of the Colosseum’s planned reopening in autumn 2025. Once complete, the venue will host major live performances and events, helping to position it as a cultural cornerstone for Watford.

The handover marks a major milestone in Watford's ten-year Town Hall Quarter regeneration, which aims to drive investment, culture, and opportunity in the town centre.
