Huddersfield Station Set For Major Transformation

Construction News Image
Huddersfield Station will undergo a significant upgrade this autumn as part of the multi-billion-pound Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU), with a full 30-day closure scheduled from Saturday 30 August to Sunday 28 September 2025.

The closure represents a major milestone in the delivery of a faster, greener, and more reliable railway across the North, with Huddersfield among the biggest beneficiaries of the TRU programme. The upgrade forms part of the wider transformation of the key rail corridor linking Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds, and York.

During the 30-day shutdown, engineers will complete an intensive programme of works, including:

• Reconstructing and extending station platforms to accommodate longer trains

• Strengthening Huddersfield viaduct

• Upgrading track and signalling infrastructure to improve reliability

The station will reopen on Monday 29 September in an interim state, with platforms 1, 2, and 3 in use while the remaining works continue. Full completion of the station upgrade is expected in early 2027.

Throughout the closure, no trains will operate through Huddersfield Station. The railway will also be shut between Berry Brow / Stalybridge and Heaton Lodge Junction near Mirfield, impacting services to and from Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield, and York.

To minimise disruption, TransPennine Express (TPE) will introduce an intensive rail replacement service between Huddersfield and Brighouse, which will operate as the main interchange for affected passengers. TPE will also divert three trains per hour between Manchester Victoria and Dewsbury via Brighouse, with additional stops added on the Calder Valley route.

In addition, Deighton Station will temporarily close from 30 August to allow for a full rebuild and surrounding infrastructure improvements. When it reopens in 2027, Deighton will feature:

• Extended platforms for longer trains

• A new footbridge with lifts for step-free access

• Expanded track capacity, allowing faster trains to overtake

• A redesigned forecourt with improved facilities and accessibility

To help the community prepare for the changes, an information drop-in event will be held on Tuesday 8 July 2025, from 3pm to 6pm at Huddersfield Town Hall, Ramsden Street.
