Construction is officially underway on the new Whitefield Community Fire Station, part of Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service's (GMFRS) £38 million Estates Improvement Programme.

Led by Robertson Construction North West, the project will replace the former fire station on Bury New Road with a modern, two-storey facility designed to meet the demands of next-generation emergency response. The development began in May with the demolition of the existing station, and work is now progressing on the new building.

The upgraded station will feature a reconfigured layout to improve accessibility, a revitalised appliance bay, a cutting-edge training tower, upgraded parking, and improved landscaping. Sustainability is a key focus of the design, with 47 solar panels and systems aimed at achieving a BREEAM Excellent rating. Recycled materials from the demolition have also been used on-site to reduce waste.

Whitefield is one of several fire stations undergoing redevelopment across the region. Robertson Construction stepped in as main contractor for both the Whitefield and Blackley sites in March, following the administration of the previous contractor.

Both projects incorporate low-carbon heating and lighting technologies to support Greater Manchester's goal of becoming a carbon neutral city-region by 2038.
