Galliford Try's Building East Midlands team has marked the official opening of the £14 million Catherine Infant School in Leicester, the first school in Leicestershire to achieve Net Zero Carbon in Operation (NZCiO) status.
The opening ceremony was led by Headteacher Mitesh Madhaw, who cut the ceremonial ribbon while pupils, staff, and parents celebrated with live music and singing. The event was attended by key dignitaries including Councillor Elaine Pantling, Assistant City Mayor for Children and Young People, representatives from the Department for Education (DfE) and other stakeholders.
Delivered through the DfE framework, the new building replaces the existing facilities at the Ofsted-rated Outstanding school. It is part of a broader programme of nine schools currently being developed by Galliford Try for the DfE, all with a strong focus on sustainability and low carbon operation.
The school, designed by Maber, accommodates 420 pupils, including 10 spaces designated for Special Provision. It serves a highly diverse community where 38 languages are spoken, and the design reflects a commitment to inclusivity and accessibility.
Sustainable features include solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, a green roof, a new car park, a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), and direct classroom access to outdoor play areas, supporting both environmental goals and modern learning environments.
