Newport Bridge is set to close temporarily this summer to allow for major ongoing maintenance works aimed at ensuring the safety and longevity of the historic structure.
The closure will begin on Monday, July 7, with work expected to continue through late summer or early autumn, after which the bridge will be reopened to traffic.
The maintenance, being delivered by Balfour Beatty, will involve replacing the bridge’s bearings and top plates, installing Vehicle Restraint Systems (VRS) for improved safety, and updating road markings. The essential upgrades form part of a wider plan to preserve the Grade II listed bridge, which was originally constructed in 1934.
During the works, the A1032 route between Newport roundabout and Portrack interchange will be fully closed to vehicular traffic. However, pedestrian and cyclist access will be maintained across the bridge throughout the duration of the project.
Signed traffic diversions will be in place, with access permitted for businesses only. From the Portrack interchange, vehicles will be redirected via the A19 southbound, then onto the A66 eastbound toward Middlesbrough, exiting again at Newport roundabout. Traffic heading from Newport roundabout will follow a reverse version of the same route.
Cllr Paul Rowling, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Resources and Transport, said: "The iconic Newport Bridge is a Grade II listed structure built in 1934, and due to its age requires regular maintenance works. These works are a continuation of activities that began in Summer 2024.
"We're sorry for any inconvenience the closure will cause for residents in our Borough and in Middlesbrough. Please stay tuned to our social media channels for any further updates on the works."
The current maintenance project is being jointly led by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council and Middlesbrough Council.
