Balfour Beatty has announced it has been awarded an £833 million contract by Technip Energies to serve as the construction partner for Net Zero Teesside Power, a landmark project set to become the world’s first gas-fired power station equipped with carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology.
The project, a joint venture between bp and Equinor, aims to demonstrate how low-carbon energy generation can support the UK's net zero ambitions. Balfour Beatty will work alongside Technip Energies and GE Vernova, with additional support from Shell Catalysts & Technologies, to construct the large-scale combined cycle gas turbine power plant.
In addition to delivering the power station, Balfour Beatty will be responsible for building the post-combustion carbon capture system. This system is designed to capture up to two million tonnes of CO₂ annually, which will then be compressed and transported via an offshore pipeline for permanent storage beneath the North Sea. The offshore storage is being developed by the Northern Endurance Partnership, a collaboration between bp, Equinor and TotalEnergies.
Bringing its extensive expertise across civil engineering, ground engineering, power transmission, and industrial mechanical and electrical systems, Balfour Beatty will play a pivotal role in delivering one of the UK’s most ambitious clean energy infrastructure projects to date.
Once operational, Net Zero Teesside Power is expected to generate up to 742 megawatts of flexible, dispatchable low-carbon electricity—enough to power more than one million UK homes each year.
Leo Quinn, Balfour Beatty Group Chief Executive, said: "Net Zero Teesside Power is an ambitious scheme, forging the path towards the sustainable infrastructure of the future and positioning the UK as a leader in cleaner, greener energy consumption.
The scheme will not only be a critical driver in achieving net zero but will also play a key role in boosting regional economic growth in the North-East of England; generating thousands of employment opportunities both in the immediate term and in the future."
