SP Energy Networks has awarded a series of major supply chain contracts as part of a £1.4 billion investment in critical onshore transmission projects across central and southern Scotland.
The move is central to the UK Government’s Clean Power 2030 ambition and aims to modernise the electricity network to support a low-carbon future.
The contracts form a key part of SP Energy Networks' wider £5.4 billion supplier investment programme planned over the next decade, which will see UK businesses play a central role in transforming and future-proofing the energy grid.
The investment is designed to increase grid capacity for new homes, businesses, and clean energy projects, move electricity more efficiently across the country, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and strengthen the UK’s energy security.
To mark the announcement, SP Energy Networks CEO Nicola Connelly and Energy Minister Michael Shanks MP attended a launch event near the company’s Glasgow headquarters. At the event, representatives from the successful contractors signed SP Energy Networks’ Delivery Charter, committing to create green jobs, generate positive community outcomes, and uphold high standards of safety.
Nicola Connelly, CEO of SP Energy Networks, said: "These strategic partnerships give suppliers the confidence to invest in themselves - growing their workforce, opening new offices across the country and creating even greater opportunities for the UK.
This is great news for the UK and Scottish supply chains, with every pound spent directly benefiting central and southern Scotland and its infrastructure for decades to come.
"This is a defining moment for our energy future. These contracts are not just about infrastructure—they’re about enabling a cleaner, greener Britain. We’re proud to be leading the charge in helping deliver the UK Government’s Clean Power 2030 ambition."
Energy Minister Michael Shanks MP added: "These SP Energy Networks partnerships take us a step closer to reaching clean power by 2030, in modernising the country's outdated network to get more of clean power generated in Scotland to homes and businesses across the country.
"This is the clean power transition in action - investing in British supply chains that will bring skilled jobs and economic growth to communities in Scotland and beyond."
The awarded contracts cover a wide scope of vital infrastructure works, including:
• New and upgraded high-voltage substations
• Overhead line construction
• Design, engineering, construction, and electrical works
Seventeen of the 19 successful suppliers are UK-based. The partnerships will initially run for five years with an option to extend to 10 years, giving suppliers the confidence to invest in technology, innovation, and skills development.
Morgan Sindall Infrastructure has been named as the sole contractor for both substation and overhead line work on the Denny to Wishaw project. A joint office for the initiative is set to open at Eurocentral this autumn.
