Construction of a new pedestrian footbridge at Kennedy Road in Barking is set to commence in late July, restoring a vital walking link in the area.
The project is being delivered by specialist contractor Taziker, known for its expertise in bridge removal and installation across the rail network. The new footbridge will be made of steel and feature stepped access, mirroring the design of the original structure. Due to space limitations in the surrounding area, ramps will not be included.
The previous bridge was dismantled following a serious safety incident in 2022, when a member of the public fell through it. Although the individual was not seriously injured, the incident prompted the bridge’s immediate removal. Since then, there has been no direct pedestrian route between Harrow Road and Kennedy Road—a gap this new structure aims to close.
Construction is expected to continue through the summer, with completion anticipated in the autumn, depending on on-site progress.
During the works, sections of Harrow Road and Kennedy Road will be temporarily closed to vehicles. Diversion routes will be clearly signposted, and pedestrian access will remain open throughout the project, with a traffic marshal on hand to assist those travelling on foot.
