Construction Of New Kennedy Road Footbridge Set To Begin In July

Construction News Image
Work is set to begin in late July on a new pedestrian footbridge at Kennedy Road in Barking, restoring a vital crossing that has been out of use since 2022.

Specialist contractor Taziker, known for its expertise in bridge removal and installation across the rail network, has been appointed to deliver the project. The new steel footbridge will feature stepped access, mirroring the layout of the original structure. Due to physical constraints in the surrounding area, the design does not include ramps.

The original bridge was removed following a serious safety incident in 2022, when a member of the public fell through it. Fortunately, the individual was not seriously injured. Since then, the link between Harrow Road and Kennedy Road has remained severed, forcing pedestrians to take longer, less direct routes.

The new footbridge will re-establish this important local connection. Construction is expected to continue throughout the summer, with completion anticipated in the autumn, subject to on-site progress.

To ensure public safety during the works, road closures will be in place along sections of Harrow Road and Kennedy Road. Diversion routes for vehicles will be clearly signposted, while pedestrian access will be maintained at all times, supported by on-site traffic marshals.

Katie Frost, route director for Network Rail Anglia, said: "I know how difficult it's been for people not being able to cross the railway at Kennedy Road, but it’s not long now before this vital local connection is restored. Our teams are working hard to prepare for construction, and we’re committed to delivering a safe and long term replacement footbridge with as little disruption as possible. Thank you to everyone for their patience and understanding during what I know has been a frustrating time."
