Step-Free Access Coming To Chalkwell Station With £7.9m Upgrade

Construction News Image
Passengers at Chalkwell station in Essex are set to benefit from step-free access for the first time, as Network Rail awards a £7.9 million contract to Octavius to deliver major accessibility upgrades under the Department for Transport's 'Access for All' (AfA) programme.

In partnership with train operator c2c and Southend City Council, the project will see the installation of two new lifts—one on each platform—making it significantly easier for people with reduced mobility, parents with pushchairs, and passengers carrying heavy luggage to move between street level and the platforms. Currently, the only way to cross between platforms is via a stepped footbridge.

Chalkwell will become the second station in the UK to adopt the innovative vertical linear beam (VLB) lift system, following its first use at Grays station, another AfA project also delivered by Octavius.

As part of the works, the existing footbridge and staircases will be demolished, including a long-disused goods lift shaft that has been out of operation for more than 40 years. A new footbridge will be constructed, complete with modern lifts and stairs to improve accessibility.

Preparatory works are scheduled to begin by the end of August 2025, with full construction due to start later in the summer. Once completed, the project will greatly improve access and ease of movement across the station for a broader range of passengers.

Katie Frost, Network Rail's route director for Anglia, said: "This project is about making our railway more inclusive and better connected to the communities we serve. Improving access at Chalkwell will help more people travel independently and with confidence, whether they're commuting, visiting family or simply getting around day to day. Working with our partners, we’re now taking an important step toward delivering these benefits."
