Contractor Appointed For Major Improvements To Wednesfield High Street

City of Wolverhampton Council has appointed Taylor Woodrow to deliver a major improvement scheme for Wednesfield High Street, with initial investigatory works scheduled to begin next week.

From Monday 23 June to Friday 27 June, Taylor Woodrow will carry out underground service and drainage surveys, along with trial holes, to inform the final design. Further investigatory works are expected to follow, with dates subject to change.

The project aims to revitalise the High Street through environmental upgrades to the public realm and market areas, encouraging greater footfall, longer visits, and increased economic activity. The initiative has been made possible through UK Government funding and follows extensive consultation with residents and traders.

Key features of the final scheme will include upgraded paving, lighting, seating, and greenery, along with enhanced pedestrian crossings and improved access from key locations such as Bentley Bridge, Lichfield Road, and Bealeys Fold. A new events and activity space will also be introduced to increase community engagement and bring life to the High Street.

Councillor Bhupinder Gakhal, City of Wolverhampton Council Cabinet Member for Resident Services, said: "I am delighted we have appointed Taylor Woodrow to carry out these important regeneration works in Wednesfield.

"With the contractor now in place we can complete the investigatory works in the coming weeks and finalise the designs ahead of main works starting.

"The finished scheme will bring the vibrancy back to Wednesfield High Street and surrounding areas, make it a more welcoming place for all and will boost the local economy."

Traffic and pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the works, with barriers and signage in place to manage safety and minimise disruption.
