Coventry City Council, in partnership with CV Life, has completed a series of sustainability upgrades at three of the city’s key leisure centres.

The works were funded by almost £750,000 in grant support from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the National Lottery through Sport England’s Swimming Pool Support Fund.

The Alan Higgs Centre, Centre AT7, and Xcel Leisure Centre have all undergone significant improvements aimed at reducing carbon emissions, lowering operational costs, and advancing Coventry’s climate change goals.

At the Alan Higgs Centre, new solar panels were installed, funded by a £250,000 grant. Centre AT7 received £270,000 to support the installation of solar panels and to replace all fluorescent lighting with energy-efficient LED systems. Xcel Leisure Centre also upgraded to LED lighting and implemented enhancements to its building management system with the help of a £220,000 grant.

These improvements are expected to reduce annual energy bills by approximately £140,000 across the three sites while also significantly cutting their environmental impact.

The investment forms part of a broader national initiative by Sport England to improve the energy efficiency of public leisure centres, particularly in areas identified as having the highest need. The upgrades in Coventry will contribute to the city’s long-term sustainability targets and ensure modern, cost-effective facilities remain accessible to local communities.
