BAM Wins Award for Sustainable Temple Quay Redevelopment

Construction News Image
BAM's transformation of Temple Quay House in Bristol is redefining what sustainable public infrastructure can achieve, earning national recognition with a Silver Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) Award.

Delivered without any demolition, the project retained and reimagined the existing structure to create over 13,100m² of high-quality office space. This data-led approach saved more than 400 tonnes of CO₂ emissions and diverted 45 tonnes of waste from landfill, establishing a powerful precedent for low-carbon, circular construction in the public sector.

The redevelopment, carried out in partnership with the UK government, goes beyond environmental performance. It injected £7 million into the local supply chain, supported the creation of 72 local jobs, and launched 23 apprenticeships. Among these was the innovative Bright Futures Academy, offering hands-on training in lighting design, sustainability and wellbeing.

In collaboration with reuse specialist Collecteco, more than 4,000m² of carpet tiles were redistributed to local charities, schools, and churches, generating £48,250 in social value. BAM also contributed £6,300 to community groups and £1,700 to foodbanks, demonstrating a strong commitment to social responsibility.

The project has significantly enhanced the building’s energy efficiency and connected it to Bristol's District Heat Network, preparing it to accommodate more than 2,000 civil servants from 18 government departments. Once occupied, Temple Quay House will represent a tangible expression of the UK's sustainability ambitions—showcasing innovation, collaboration, and lasting community impact.
