Deighton Station To Close For Major Rebuild

Construction News Image
Deighton station will temporarily close from Saturday 30 August as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU), a multi-billion-pound programme set to transform rail travel across the North of England.

The station is expected to reopen in 2027 with a completely rebuilt, modernised layout designed to support faster, greener, and more reliable train services. Key upgrades include:

• Extended platforms to accommodate longer trains with increased seating capacity

• A new footbridge with lifts, providing step-free access to both platforms

• Expansion from two to four tracks, enabling faster services to overtake slower ones

• A redesigned station forecourt featuring a drop-off point, accessible parking, and improved waiting shelters

To support passengers during the closure, an hourly rail replacement bus service will run between Huddersfield and Deighton. From 29 September 2025, this service will also serve Brighouse, offering connections to trains towards Manchester, Dewsbury, and Leeds.

Customers are encouraged to plan ahead and check nationalrail.co.uk or their train operator's website for up-to-date journey information and details on rail replacement services.

As part of the upgrade works, Whitacre Street—already closed to vehicles—will also close to pedestrians from Wednesday 20 August until July 2026. This closure is necessary for the full replacement of the Whitacre Street bridge, creating space for new tracks and overhead electric lines to support the transition to cleaner, electric trains.

Gareth Hope, Sponsor for the Transpennine Route Upgrade, said: "We appreciate that this will cause disruption to station users and would like to thank passengers for their patience and support.

"The work being undertaken at Deighton will allow the station to be brought up to modern standards and accommodate better rail travel across the North.

"We encourage rail passengers and road users to check before they travel within the affected timeframes for the closures of both Deighton station and Whitacre Street."
