Kier has completed the refurbishment of a new NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) facility in Eastleigh, transforming office space at Concept House into a state-of-the-art blood donation centre aimed at boosting local donations and supporting critical NHS needs.

Delivered in just 14 weeks, the project is part of a wider national effort to increase blood donations amid ongoing low stock levels. The newly completed centre will host over 400 appointments a week, with the potential to save up to 1,200 lives through donated blood used in emergency treatments, cancer care, and the management of chronic conditions.

Procured through the SCAPE National Construction Framework, the refurbishment was led by Kier Places, in collaboration with multi-disciplinary consultancy Pick Everard. The team delivered architectural, structural engineering, and mechanical and electrical (M&E) services, upgrading the facility to meet stringent healthcare standards.

The new donation centre features nine donation beds, individual consultation rooms, an environmentally controlled storage unit, a kitchen, and a waiting area. As part of the transformation, outdated M&E systems were stripped out and replaced to align with medical requirements.

The opening of the centre comes during the week of World Sickle Cell Day (Thursday 19 June), drawing attention to the urgent need for specific blood types required to treat patients with sickle cell disease, the UK's fastest-growing genetic disorder, predominantly affecting people of Black heritage. Around 50% of Black Caribbean and Black African individuals have a blood subtype called RO, which is essential for treating this condition.
