Winvic Construction Ltd has marked a major milestone in the construction of Crown Place Birmingham, celebrating the topping out of the 33-storey tower, the tallest purpose-built student accommodation in the city.
A special ceremony took place on Level 32 of the building, attended by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councillor Zafar Iqbal. Representatives from project partners Crown Student Living, Corvette Capital, Yugo, and Beaufort Capital were also present, along with design consultants, university stakeholders and members of the local community.
Located on Lancaster Street, just minutes from Birmingham's city centre and close to several major universities, the £85 million development will provide 814 student beds and over 13,000 sq ft of communal amenities. Operated by Europe's largest student housing provider, Yugo, Crown Place will offer a mix of studios, cluster flats, and duplexes. Facilities will include a sky lounge, cinema room, karaoke room, private dining areas, and a gym, raising the bar for student living in Birmingham.
The scheme is being delivered by Winvic in partnership with engineers Meinhardt and architects ECE Westworks. It is scheduled for completion in December 2025, with students set to move in from January 2026.
Since construction began, the project has been at the forefront of innovation. It was the first in the UK to deploy Skyline Cockpit, a remote tower crane system controlled from ground level, enhancing site safety and operational efficiency. Other cutting-edge technologies include HP SitePrint for robotic layout, GAMMA AR tools for precision planning, and the AmpD Enertainer battery system, which has reduced weekly diesel usage by 7,645 litres—supporting the site’s sustainability goals.
The project has also delivered strong social value outcomes, with over 2,900 weeks of employment created for Birmingham residents. Thirteen students and apprentices have been supported through placements and training, while community initiatives have included fundraising events, educational partnerships, and volunteering efforts such as canal clean-ups and a Santa’s Grotto for Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
Mark Jones, Managing Director of Multi-Room at Winvic Construction, said: "Topping out Crown Place Birmingham is a proud moment for all involved. This project is not only Winvic’s tallest scheme to date, but one of our most innovative – where new cutting-edge technologies have been at the heart of this project resulting in industry and business firsts – driving enhanced efficiency, safety, precision and programme certainty.
'The quality of the build is testament to the collaborative approach between Crown Student Living, Yugo, our supply chain, and our exceptional Winvic team and the topping out ceremony is a celebration of the incredible progress made. We now look forward to continuing works at this industry-leading development ready for practical completion in December."
