Kier has completed the delivery of a major new life sciences facility at the Advanced Research Clusters (ARC) West London Refinery Building in Hammersmith, providing 150,000 sq ft of high-specification laboratory, research and development space.

Situated on the northern embankment of the River Thames, the landmark project saw the extension and full reconfiguration of an existing four-storey structure. A two-storey rooftop addition now houses additional laboratory and event space, topped by a green biodiverse roof designed to support habitat creation. The building also features a corrosion-resistant Corten steel façade, giving the development a distinctive identity.

The project was designed to meet ambitious targets around sustainability, efficiency, and adaptability. In a key move to reduce environmental impact, the original concrete frame was retained to cut demolition waste and conserve embodied carbon.

Kier incorporated several innovative construction techniques, including the use of 350mm in-situ concrete slabs. These were essential in minimising vibration levels, a critical factor for prospective tenants undertaking highly sensitive scientific work.

Internally, the facility has been comprehensively redeveloped to offer a range of flexible, high-quality spaces. These include laboratories, design-led offices, co-working areas, meeting rooms and a business lounge. The building also provides amenities such as a restaurant, event studio, presentation suite, and secure cycle storage for up to 200 bicycles.
