Winvic Appointed To Deliver Highways Works For Weyside Urban Village

Construction News Image
Winvic Construction Ltd has been appointed by Guildford Borough Council to deliver a major package of highways infrastructure works for the Weyside Urban Village, a landmark regeneration project that will bring 1,550 new and affordable homes to the area alongside green spaces, employment zones, a commercial centre and a sustainable transport hub.

The first phase of the highways programme began in early May 2025, with the remaining nine phases scheduled to be delivered over the next 18 months. The scope of work includes a wide range of improvements, such as roundabout reconfiguration, road widening, creation of residential parking bays, signalisation works, and the installation of a new toucan crossing.

To support sustainable travel and reduce congestion, the project will introduce dedicated bus lanes to improve service reliability, alongside a comprehensive new network of footpaths and cycleways to encourage active travel. Connectivity will also be enhanced by upgrades to the on and off ramps linking the A3 and A320.

The first highways project now underway is the construction of a new toucan crossing on Woking Road. Replacing an existing uncontrolled crossing between Old Woking Road and Fir Tree Road, the new facility will allow pedestrians and cyclists to cross simultaneously, with completion expected by August 2025.

Winvic has been involved in the Weyside Urban Village site since February 2024, delivering on-site infrastructure work to prepare for future residential development. This includes the creation of plateaus for housing construction and earthworks remediation totalling approximately 34,000m³ by the project's scheduled completion in November 2025.

Drainage works began in October 2024, involving the installation of 4,500 metres of foul, storm, and private drainage systems, including attenuation crates and sustainable drainage systems (SuDS). Winvic is also constructing 670 metres of internal roads and 1,300 metres of footpaths, all integrated with tactile crossing points to enhance accessibility.

As part of its commitment to delivering long-term value to the community, Winvic will also lead a series of social value initiatives. These include local employment and training opportunities, support for STEM education in partnership with the Surrey Careers Hub, and volunteer-led community engagement projects.

Rob Cook, Managing Director for Civils & Infrastructure at Winvic, said: "We are proud to be working with Guildford Borough Council on the Weyside Urban Village project, which represents a significant investment in Guildford's future that delivers vital infrastructure to unlock much-needed housing and promotes sustainable development and public transport solutions. Our involvement in both the on-site infrastructure and off-site highways works demonstrates Winvic’s capability to deliver complex, multi-phase, civil engineering projects with sustainability and social impact at the heart, that create long-lasting benefits for residents and the wider community."
