Network Rail (Wales and Borders) is carrying out essential track renewal and maintenance works between Bridgend and St Fagans as part of efforts to ensure the long-term safety and reliability of the rail network.
The upgrade programme will involve replacing rails, sleepers, and the ballast (stones) beneath the track. Work is scheduled to take place across both day and night shifts to reduce disruption for passengers where possible.
To allow safe access for engineers, St Fagans level crossing will be closed during two weekend periods, with diversions in place for both vehicles and pedestrians:
• Saturday 21 June, 11pm to Monday 23 June, 6am
• Saturday 5 July, 11pm to Monday 7 July, 6am
Passengers are advised to allow extra travel time during this period.
The works will affect some Great Western Railway (GWR) and Transport for Wales (TfW) services:
• GWR trains will be diverted via Barry, with journey times extended by up to 35 minutes and intermediate stops between Bridgend and Cardiff skipped.
• A shuttle train service will operate between Swansea and Carmarthen.
• Most GWR services will depart earlier from Swansea, Neath, Port Talbot Parkway, and Bridgend.
• TfW services will also be diverted via Barry.
• A rail replacement bus service will operate between Cardiff Central and Bridgend.
