Cardiff Council and Wates Residential have celebrated a key milestone in the transformation of the Channel View estate in Grangetown, with the topping out of Block B, a six-storey building that will provide 24 highly energy-efficient council homes for older people.
The new homes form part of Phase 1 of the city’s largest estate regeneration project, which is set to replace an outdated tower block with 126 modern, accessible homes designed to support independent living.
Block A, the second building in this initial phase, will feature 102 Community Living apartments, complete with shared amenities such as a rooftop terrace, café, and community spaces. Completion of Block A is expected in 2027.
The wider Channel View regeneration will be delivered in phases and ultimately replace around 180 ageing properties with up to 400 low-carbon homes across a variety of tenures. The project has the capacity to deliver up to 4,000 new homes across the city as part of Cardiff Council’s broader housing development programme.
In addition to new housing, the scheme includes plans to improve connectivity, enhance infrastructure, and upgrade green spaces. This will involve improvements to The Marl park and the creation of high-quality public areas, integrating sustainable drainage systems and green infrastructure throughout the estate.
