Morgan Sindall Completes Refurb At Broomfield Hospital

Morgan Sindall Construction has reached a major milestone in the refurbishment of Broomfield Hospital, completing phases A and B of an extensive redevelopment project aimed at enhancing and futureproofing the site's healthcare provision.

The project has involved the full removal of Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC), the installation of new structural steelwork, and the addition of a hollow rib metal deck roof with a durable Bauder roof membrane. Significant internal remodelling was also carried out, incorporating major upgrades to mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) services.

As a result of the restoration, the hospital now benefits from a new kitchen equipped with cold storage facilities, expanded medical records capacity, and improved pharmaceutical provisions, alongside the complete elimination of RAAC from the structure.

To facilitate the works, several departments were temporarily relocated, while critical hospital services remained operational in other parts of the facility. With hospital staff now beginning to return to the upgraded spaces, Morgan Sindall has commenced phase C of the project.

The final phase will deliver new linen facilities, staff changing rooms, rest areas, offices, and expanded storage space for various departments. It will also see the completion of the medical records facility.

The refurbishment is being delivered in collaboration with Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust and Broomfield Hospital, with weekly meetings ensuring disruption to ongoing healthcare services is kept to a minimum. Upon completion in late 2025, the project will have modernised 4,000 square metres of hospital space.

As part of its social value commitment, Morgan Sindall has employed two apprentices in site and assistant site management roles and engaged 40–50 local operatives from within a 20-mile radius of the site.

Ryan Liversage, Area Director for Morgan Sindall Construction in Essex, commented: "It's been a pleasure to work closely with Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust to deliver the necessary upgrades to facilities in Broomfield Hospital. These are complex, challenging healthcare spaces, so it's vital that the built environment supporting the important work of the Trust’s staff is able to support them as much as possible.

"Our team has extensive experience working in healthcare environments, which means we’re well versed in the design and construction requirements of these facilities as well as the importance of being flexible to the operational needs of clinical teams. We look forward to continuing our collaborative relationship with the Trust as we complete the following phases of the project later this year."
