A major milestone in the transformation of Whitehill & Bordon was reached this week as ground was officially broken on a new 16,000 sq ft Sainsbury's supermarket, set to become a cornerstone of the town's growing centre.
Located on the former Army site, the new store marks the latest phase in a major redevelopment project led by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) and its development partners. The wider regeneration has already delivered 2,400 new homes, and the new supermarket is expected to create around 75 local jobs when it opens its doors in summer 2026.
The start of construction was celebrated at a groundbreaking ceremony attended by key stakeholders, local dignitaries, community members, and business owners, symbolising the continued momentum behind Whitehill & Bordon's transformation.
The Sainsbury's development is a key anchor for the emerging town centre and comes as regeneration efforts gather pace, supported by a newly established local taskforce. Following the completion of the supermarket, construction will begin on the town's new Health Hub, another crucial element of the town’s long-term vision. Additionally, upgrades to The Shed, Bordon's dining and entertainment hub, have recently been completed, revitalising one of the earliest features of the new centre.
Robert Smith, Deputy Head of Major Disposals at the Defence Infrastructure Organisation, said: "The start of works on this new supermarket is an important moment in our plans to transform this site into a thriving new town centre. The regeneration of Whitehill & Bordon is a great example of how, through strong partnership working, we can make the best use of surplus public land to benefit local communities."
