Chichester District Council has formally approved plans by Countryside Properties, now part of the Vistry Group, for the development of 1,300 new homes and community facilities in Tangmere.
The planning decision notice marks a major milestone for the 'Tangmere Strategic Development Location Site', which also includes a new primary school, commercial space and other community amenities.
Initially granted a resolution to approve in March 2021, the project faced delays due to the complexities of the Compulsory Purchase Order process and amendments to the planning boundary. A renewed resolution to grant permission was secured in August 2023, and the issuance of the formal notice now enables the development to progress to its next phase.
Allocated within the Chichester Local Plan and the Tangmere Neighbourhood Plan, the project has been developed in close consultation with Tangmere Parish Council and local residents. Vistry Group was selected by the council to lead the delivery of this major initiative.
Martin Leach, Managing Director of Vistry Strategic Land, said: "Receiving formal outline planning permission is a significant step in realising the vision for Tangmere. We remain committed to working closely with Tangmere Parish Council and local residents to produce a Design Code that will guide the next phase of this transformative development."
With outline planning now secured, the development will move into the detailed design stage through a reserved matters application. Infrastructure work is expected to begin in 2026, with full construction of the new homes and facilities scheduled to start later that year.
