CityFibre Completes £58m Full Fibre Network Rollout In Reading

CityFibre has completed the primary build of its full fibre broadband network in Reading, marking a major milestone in its national rollout.

The £58 million infrastructure project now provides ‘ready for service’ connectivity to more than 97,000 homes, covering approximately 98% of properties and most businesses across Reading and its surrounding areas.

Construction on the project began in 2020, and since then CityFibre has installed around 1,230 kilometres of dense full fibre cabling across the town.

Reading now ranks among the UK's best-connected locations. Although the main phase of construction is complete, CityFibre will continue working to connect additional properties, including apartment buildings, new developments, business parks, and homes on private roads.

Full fibre networks, which use 100% fibre optics to transmit data at light speed, offer significant performance advantages over traditional copper-based broadband. CityFibre’s infrastructure currently supports symmetrical download and upload speeds of up to 2.5Gbps, and is future-proofed for speeds of up to 10Gbps. This is over 36 times faster than the UK’s average download speed of 69.4Mbps, and more than 136 times faster than the average upload speed of 18.4Mbps.

Residents in Reading can now access fast and reliable full fibre broadband from a range of internet service providers, including Vodafone, TalkTalk, Giganet and Zen, with more providers expected to join soon. Homes passed by the network can typically be connected within five working days of placing an order.
