Blackpool Council is trialling a cutting-edge road repair method as part of its continued investment in maintaining over 300 miles of the town's road network.
In a partnership with specialist contractor Thermal Road Repairs, essential resurfacing work has begun on the mini roundabout at West Park Drive using a technology that reuses the existing road material, reducing both waste and environmental impact.
The repair method utilises Thermal Road Repairs patented 'pulse heat' system, which can heat and soften up to 100mm of road surface. This allows the material to be reworked into a smooth finish without the need for removing and replacing layers of tarmac.
The process is significantly more eco-friendly than traditional methods, generating no waste and substantially lowering the carbon footprint of road maintenance. The machine used for the West Park Drive works is among the largest of its kind in the UK, capable of covering larger sections at once and reducing the overall time needed for repairs.
Cllr Paula Burdess, Blackpool Council's Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Street Scene and Neighbourhoods, said: "We're working with innovative contractors to produce longer-lasting results and extend the life span of Blackpool's roads, as part of the council’s commitment to continuously improve the quality and durability of the roads in the town. We’re dedicated to investing in Blackpool's roads to create smoother journeys for residents, businesses and visitors."
A spokesperson from Thermal Road Repairs added: "We're proud to support Blackpool in its continued commitment to innovation and sustainability in infrastructure. Our partnership demonstrates what's possible when advanced technology and local authorities work together to improve services and reduce environmental impact."
