Work to significantly improve one of Manchester city centre's busiest junctions is set to begin on Monday 2 June, with a series of upgrades planned for the Trinity Way/Great Ducie Street intersection.
Located near Manchester College, AO Arena, and Victoria Station, the junction is a vital pedestrian and traffic route. With student numbers at the nearby college set to rise, major regeneration taking place in the Strangeways area, and over 400 new homes completed on the former Boddingtons Brewery site, the area is becoming increasingly busy.
To enhance safety and accommodate future growth, the city council is investing in a series of infrastructure improvements that aim to create a safer and more accessible environment for pedestrians and motorists alike.
Between 2017 and 2021, there were 15 accidents at the junction, resulting in 21 injuries, including one serious injury.
The planned improvements, expected to continue until mid-July, include:
• Installation of a new controlled pedestrian crossing on the east side of the junction near Manchester College
• Redesign of the existing pedestrian crossing on the west side near the Kickair trampoline centre
• Installation of guard rails and bollards to prevent pavement parking on the kerb island by New Bridge Street and Mirabel Street
• A ban on left turns for northbound traffic on Great Ducie Street, with kerb build-outs to physically prevent the manoeuvre
• Updated road markings and signage to reflect the new traffic layout
Works will take place Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm, with daytime lane closures restricted to off-peak hours between 9:30am and 3:30pm. Some overnight lane closures are also planned, though no works will occur on weekends.
To minimise disruption during major city events, there will be no overnight closures during the Parklife festival (14–15 June) and concerts by Peter Kay and Pulp (21–22 June).
A traffic management plan will ensure the junction remains operational throughout the works, though motorists are advised to plan ahead and consider alternative routes due to anticipated delays.
