Teddington Station Now Step-Free Following £5.4m Accessibility Upgrade

Construction News Image
Teddington station has officially become step-free, following the completion of a £5.4 million investment aimed at improving accessibility for rail passengers on Network Rail's Wessex route.

As part of the project, new lifts have been installed on either side of the existing footbridge, providing step-free access between the Victoria Road and Station Road entrances. The upgrade enables seamless interchange for passengers connecting between the Shepperton branch line and services towards Twickenham and Richmond.

Delivered in partnership with South Western Railway (SWR) and the London Borough of Richmond, the improvements were celebrated earlier today at a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by local MP Munira Wilson, representatives from Network Rail and SWR, and other invited guests.

Teddington is the latest in a series of stations across the Wessex route to benefit from accessibility upgrades. Over the past year, similar improvements have been completed at Stoneleigh, Farnborough North, Motspur Park, Walton-on-Thames, and Isleworth. The Wessex route serves communities across Surrey, Berkshire, Hampshire, Dorset, Devon, Somerset, and Wiltshire.

The enhancements at Teddington have been funded through the Department for Transport’s (DfT) 'Access for All' programme, which aims to remove barriers for passengers with reduced mobility by creating obstacle-free routes from station entrances to platforms. This typically includes the installation of lifts or ramps, along with refurbishment and associated improvements.

Opened in 1863, Teddington station is part of the Kingston Loop and was granted Grade II listed status in 2012. Between April 2023 and March 2024, more than 1.6 million people used the station, with over 75,000 interchanging between services.
