The Build Salford traineeship has made its return to Morgan Sindall Construction's Knowledge Quad for the third time, continuing its mission to provide young people in Salford with a hands-on, practical route into the construction industry.
Targeting 16- to 24-year-olds, the industry-led programme offers a unique blend of classroom learning, site visits, and work placements, preparing participants for apprenticeships and long-term employment in construction. Since its launch, the initiative has supported nearly 100 local residents, many of whom have gone on to secure skilled roles across Greater Manchester’s construction sector.
Delivered in partnership with Salford City College and Salford City Council, and supported by over 20 local employers, Build Salford demonstrates a strong collective effort to build a skilled future workforce while opening doors for young people. The six-week programme includes a four-week placement with one of the participating partner organisations.
This year's cohort is based at Morgan Sindall's Salford Knowledge Quad, a dedicated training hub embedded within a live construction site at Plot C2, New Bailey. The site is currently being transformed into a 23-storey residential building, designed by Hawkins\Brown and funded by CBRE Investment Management. Once complete, it will deliver 196 contemporary apartments with shared amenities, forming a key part of the wider Salford Central regeneration scheme led by ECF—a joint venture between Homes England, Legal & General, and Muse Developments.
In their first week, the trainees got straight to work with practical ‘have-a-go’ sessions on the 13th and 17th floors of the C2 development. These workshops, delivered by Morgan Sindall in partnership with Cara Brickwork, Titan, and John Martin Painting Ltd, gave the participants valuable exposure to real-world construction skills such as bricklaying, spray plastering, and painting and decorating.
Classroom sessions further complemented their learning, with industry insights provided by Ardere and Metclad on firestopping and cladding. Additionally, the Morgan Sindall site team led workshops on site management to help the trainees understand the broader context of construction project delivery.
Three members of the current cohort will remain on-site at the C2 development for their four-week placements, gaining deeper experience as they continue to develop their skills.
