A new vision to revitalise Droylsden has been unveiled, with Tameside Council formally approving a long-term masterplan aimed at transforming the town centre into a vibrant, green, and sustainable community hub.
Developed with extensive input from local residents and stakeholders, the masterplan outlines a future-focused strategy for making Droylsden more inclusive, better connected, and attractive to both locals and investors. The plan is backed by £100,000 in funding from Homes England and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA).
Key proposals in the plan include reconnecting the town by reopening the historic Hollinwood branch of the canal to create green, walkable routes between the marina and retail area. Public spaces like Droylsden Square and Villemomble Square will be revitalised with more greenery, seating, and lighting to support events and community gatherings.
Improving pedestrian and cyclist safety is also a major focus, particularly around the busy A662 Manchester Road, with plans for safer, more accessible routes to better connect people to the heart of the town.
Other major proposals involve the redevelopment of key sites, including the Concorde Suite and Droylsden Shopping Centre, to enhance the town’s retail and leisure offerings and attract new visitors. The council is already working with stakeholders such as New Era (owners of the shopping centre) and Cushman & Wakefield to explore redevelopment opportunities.
"This is fantastic news for Droylsden," said Councillor Stephen Homer, Tameside Council Executive Member for Towns, Transport and Connectivity. "The masterplan has been shaped by feedback from residents and stakeholders to address the negative aspects of the town and identify opportunities for change. There is still a lot of work ahead to source funding and investment but the masterplan will set the foundation for the next 15 years and is vitally important for the future and growth of the town so we can look to create more jobs and homes in the area and help sustainably reshape it as a place people can enjoy and spend time in."
The Council has also secured an additional £163,000 through the Combined Authority Flexible Local Authority Grant Scheme. This funding will support detailed planning and costings for public realm improvements, and help deliver early "quick win" initiatives such as greening efforts and enhancements to public spaces.
