A major expansion of the Port of Tilbury has been set in motion as owners Forth Ports has submitted an outline planning application to Thurrock Council for the development of a new port facility, Tilbury3 (T3).
The proposed project will redevelop a 100-acre brownfield site—equivalent to 70 football pitches, located directly adjacent to the existing Tilbury2 (T2) terminal. The expansion forms a key part of the Thames Freeport, and is expected to benefit from tax site incentives designed to attract investment, boost trade, and generate employment in the region.
According to Forth Ports, T3 will support a wide range of port and industrial operations, including general storage and warehousing, materials processing, a construction aggregate terminal, container handling, and vehicle storage.
The site, which forms part of the former Tilbury Power Station, is strategically located to share road, rail, and river infrastructure with T2. This integration is expected to streamline connectivity to the national highway and freight networks, further strengthening Tilbury’s position as a key logistics hub for Greater London and the South East.
If the outline planning application is approved, Forth Ports will move forward with a detailed submission, including layouts, scale, and architectural design, supported by environmental impact assessments and ecological preservation strategies. The company has pledged to mirror the successful biodiversity and habitat creation initiatives delivered through previous developments at T2 and the London Distribution Park (LDP).
Stuart Wallace, CEO of Forth Ports Group, said: "This is an exciting time for the Port of Tilbury as we submit our plans for Tilbury3 which form part of our growth investment strategy to expand our operations in support of our customer's growth markets in renewable power, recycling and logistics. T3 will sustain existing roles and create many new jobs; contribute to the local economy; and future proof the Port of Tilbury in supporting the economies of Greater London and the South East."
