Work Starts On £16m Health Faculty Expansion At University of Sheffield

Clegg Construction has officially commenced work on a new state-of-the-art Faculty of Health building for the University of Sheffield.

The £16 million development will bolster the work of the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN), renowned for its research into neurodegenerative diseases such as Motor Neurone Disease, Parkinson's, dementia and Multiple Sclerosis.

Located on the Glossop Road/Clarkehouse Road site, the first phase of the Faculty of Health project includes the demolition of existing structures on the Barber House Annex and Central Garages site. In their place, a three-storey facility will rise, featuring new teaching spaces, laboratories, offices, and work areas for students, visiting researchers, and staff.

The new building will be physically connected to SITraN via a link corridor, enhancing collaboration between researchers and clinicians, particularly those based at the adjacent Royal Hallamshire Hospital. A redesigned frontage on Glossop Road will visually tie the new facility more closely to both the hospital and the wider university campus.

The design accommodates the site's sloping terrain, with two storeys visible from the street and a third storey extending toward the rear. Bond Bryan is serving as architect and landscape designer, while Ridge has been appointed as the structural engineer.

"This is our fourth contract with the University of Sheffield and we are very pleased that work has now got under way on site," said Clegg Construction contracts manager Craig Gibbons. "SITraN is well known for supporting pioneering research into serious neurodegenerative conditions. This project will help to increase space for research and also improve collaboration between academics at the university and clinicians at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. We are proud to be involved in a project which has such potential for the improvement of patient treatment and care."

The project is slated for completion and handover in September 2026.
