Four schools in Peterborough are set to undergo expansion works later this year to meet increasing demand for school places, following funding approvals from Peterborough City Council.
The schools – Duke of Bedford Primary School in Thorney, Stanground Academy, Marshfields School, and NeneGate School – will each see targeted improvements aimed at increasing capacity and improving facilities.
At Duke of Bedford Primary School, two new mobile classroom units with toilets will be installed over the summer, alongside a reconfiguration of existing toilet facilities within the main building. The changes will enable a phased increase in pupil intake from 30 to 45 children per year, accommodating 15 additional pupils annually. The project is funded through Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) contributions from Allison Homes' housing development in Thorney, along with basic need grant funding allocated to the council.
Stanground Academy is currently undergoing an extension to expand its dining facilities. Work began in March 2025 and is scheduled for completion by September, ensuring the school can support growing student numbers in the south of the city.
Marshfields School will see the addition of two new classrooms with toilets to create 16 more places for primary-aged children with severe learning difficulties. Construction is due to start in July 2025 and will be completed in time for the new academic year.
At NeneGate School, plans are in place to build a new teaching block containing five classrooms, enabling the school to accommodate an additional 40 pupils with social, emotional, and mental health needs over a phased two-year period. The development will also allow the school to extend its primary provision to cover the full Key Stage Two range (Years 3 to 6). The new block is expected to be ready by September 2026.
