BOOM Power has announced that the East Yorkshire Solar Farm has officially received development consent.
The approval, granted on 9 May 2025 by Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero Ed Miliband MP, follows a thorough planning and consultation process, culminating in the issuance of a Development Consent Order (DCO). The project becomes the first Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP) led entirely by the BOOM Power team to achieve this status, and their second successful NSIP overall. The first was Cleve Hill Solar Park, approved in May 2020 under BOOM’s former identity, Wirsol Energy Ltd, in partnership with Hive Energy Ltd.
Located between the hamlet of Gribthorpe, the villages of Spaldington and Wressle, and the town of Howden, the East Yorkshire Solar Farm is set to generate approximately 400 megawatts (MW) of low-carbon electricity—enough to power around 100,000 homes. The project directly supports the UK government’s goals to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 and deliver 70 gigawatts of solar capacity by 2035.
The project's design underwent a detailed Environmental Impact Assessment and was shaped by multiple public consultations. Key design features include buffer zones and screening vegetation to minimise visual impact, preservation of existing hedgerows, and creation of wildlife habitats such as grassland and woodland. An area near the River Foulness has also been incorporated to support overwintering bird species. Public rights of way will be retained and enhanced with new permissive paths to improve local accessibility.
Construction of the solar farm is expected to bring economic benefits to the region, including employment opportunities and indirect support for local businesses during the build phase.
Mark Hogan, Founder of BOOM Power, said: "Securing development consent for the East Yorkshire Solar Farm is not only a proud and significant moment for BOOM Power but marks a major advancement in the UK's clean energy landscape and demonstrates our capability to deliver nationally significant infrastructure. The project has been meticulously designed to integrate renewable energy generation with environmental enhancements and grid stability considerations. This consent reflects the strength of collaboration, detailed planning, and valuable local input – it’s a significant achievement for both our team and the wider region.
"I want to personally thank our partners throughout the process, the fabulous landowners, my co-investors Pelion Green Future for their shared vision and most importantly, the amazing team at BOOM of which my dear son Sam, who is no longer with us, helped formulate the design of this important project – thank you!"
The DCO application was accepted for examination in December 2023, with the process concluding in November 2024. The Examining Authority's recommendation was submitted in February 2025, leading to the final consent this May.
