Two higher-level apprentices from Leeds College of Building have received top recognition at the 2025 West Yorkshire Apprenticeship Awards.
Charlie Brady, a Level 4 Construction Quantity Surveying Technician Apprentice employed by EN:Able Futures, took home the prestigious Higher Apprentice of the Year Award. The accolade recognises Charlie's remarkable work ethic, technical acumen, and professionalism, demonstrated through responsibilities such as subcontractor account management, valuation of completed works and supporting the financial health of major projects.
Since beginning his apprenticeship at the Leeds College of Building in Quantity Surveying, Charlie has demonstrated exceptional need to learn, work ethic, and maturity. His decision to pursue an apprenticeship after completing a full-time BTEC Level 3 in Construction and the Built Environment reflects his clear vision of becoming a Quantity Surveyor.
"More than just a capable apprentice, Charlie is a role model for others—professional, driven, and committed to continuous improvement. His contributions to lessons and support for other students was evident in all units along with his desire to understand the subject. I am confident that Charlie will continue to progress in the industry and will be a valuable member of any team," said Richard Leese, Curriculum Manager – Level 4 Apprenticeship.
Meanwhile, Jake Sterling, who works for CML Civil Engineering and is undertaking a Construction Quantity Surveying Degree Apprenticeship in partnership with London South Bank University, was named Highly Commended in the Degree Apprentice of the Year category.
Nikki Carthy, Curriculum Manager for Degree Apprenticeships, praised Jake's achievement: "We're absolutely delighted with Jake’s well-deserved achievement, which reflects not only his hard work and dedication, but also his brilliant attitude. Jake is a fantastic role model—committed, focused, and always ready to contribute. His passion for learning shines through in everything he does, and his approachable nature makes him a pleasure to work with. Many congratulations, Jake!
"Having apprentices like these working at this level is a huge credit to the College. It shows what’s possible when talent, determination, and the right support come together. This success is not only each student’s personal triumph but also a fantastic example of the impact high-quality apprenticeships can have in shaping the future of the industry."
Finalists from the College also included Archie Heckingbottom (CML Civil Engineering) and Tom Marwood (NG Bailey), who were recognised for reaching the final stages of the competition.
Now in its fourth year, the West Yorkshire Apprenticeship Awards—founded by the Yorkshire Evening Post in collaboration with the Halifax Courier and Wakefield Express—celebrate excellence in apprenticeships across the region. Held at the Cedar Court Hotel in Bradford and hosted by radio DJ Rich Williams, this year’s event brought together more than 250 apprentices, educators, and employers to honour achievements across 14 categories.
