£25m Community Diagnostic Centre Officially Opens

Construction News Image
A £25 million Community Diagnostic Centre at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) was officially opened in late April by His Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of Norfolk, The Lady Dannatt MBE, marking a major milestone in the delivery of modern healthcare services across Norfolk and Waveney.

The state-of-the-art facility, located at the Norwich Research Park, is set to significantly reduce waiting times and improve access to diagnostic imaging services including X-Ray, MRI, Ultrasound and CT scans. Patients will benefit from faster results and more streamlined treatment pathways.

During the opening ceremony, Lady Dannatt toured the patient-focused unit and unveiled a commemorative plaque to mark the occasion.

The project was procured through the NHS Shared Business Services (SBS) framework and delivered by Morgan Sindall Construction's Eastern Counties business, in partnership with international design firm NBBJ.

The 40,000 sq. ft Diagnostic Centre features five MRI machines, four CT scanners, two Ultrasound rooms, and two X-Ray suites. Designed to integrate seamlessly with the existing hospital estate and nearby Quadram Institute, the building’s steel frame and brick façade align with the architectural character of the campus. The design prioritises patient comfort with open spaces filled with natural daylight and intuitive wayfinding systems.

As part of Morgan Sindall's Intelligent Solutions strategy, the construction included a strong focus on sustainability. The team used the company’s digital carbon reduction tool, CarboniCa, achieving a total carbon saving of 786.9 tonnes CO2e—the equivalent of heating 291 UK homes for a year.

Alister Broadberry, Area Director for Morgan Sindall Construction in the Eastern Counties, said: "It has been a pleasure working alongside Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals Trust on this project, which will have a significant impact on the lives of the people of Norfolk and Waveney as they are able to access vital diagnostic imaging more quickly, which will, in turn improve overall health outcomes.

Delivering this new, state-of-the-art facility is an incredible accomplishment for us, and we can’t wait to see the impact of the important work that can take place as a result of the efforts of our team, NNUH, and the supply chain."

Julia Kazimierczak, NNUH Head of Major Projects and Programme Senior Responsible Officer (SRO), added: "I would like to thank everyone who has played a role in delivering this facility successfully. It is a programme we are particularly proud of bringing together innovative design, workforce and operational standardisation across Norfolk and Waveney Radiology services – all with patients and staff at the centre."
