Neath Port Talbot Council has announced proposals for a new integrated transport hub at the front of Neath railway station, aiming to bring bus, rail, cycling and walking routes together in one central location.
The plans would see the relocation of the current bus station at Victoria Gardens to a new, purpose-built hub at Station Square. The project also includes secure cycle storage and dedicated walking and cycling routes, helping to connect active travel networks directly to public transport.
If approved, the redevelopment will transform the station forecourt into a modern and accessible gateway to Neath town centre, encouraging more visitors, shoppers, and commuters to the area while also aiming to reduce anti-social behaviour through increased footfall and improved infrastructure.
The council is working in partnership with Transport for Wales, Network Rail and engineering consultants Amey to develop the project and is now seeking views from residents and businesses through a public consultation running from 30 April to 11 June.
Public feedback can be submitted via an online survey available at www.npt.gov.uk/neathtransporthub, and three drop-in consultation events will be held at Neath Library on:
• Tuesday 13 May, 2–7pm
• Wednesday 14 May, 3–8pm
• Thursday 15 May, 2–7pm
The proposed transport hub would include:
• Integrated bus, rail, and taxi services
• A weather-protected passenger concourse with covered seating
• A green roof canopy and landscaped public areas
• Live customer information screens for all transport modes
• Secure cycle storage and enhanced pedestrian access
• Improved safety and reduced anti-social behaviour
The initiative supports the Welsh Government's vision to create better-connected national, regional, and local transport systems. Funding so far has come from the Local Transport Fund, with further development subject to additional Welsh Government grants and planning approval.
Further public consultation will take place during the planning application phase.
