Network Rail is set to carry out more than 630 projects across Britain's railway network during the early and late May Bank Holidays, aiming to deliver key infrastructure improvements while keeping most services running as normal.
The quieter bank holiday weekends, particularly on major commuter routes, provide an opportunity for intensive works with minimal disruption to passengers and freight users. While many projects can be completed in one or two days, the three-day bank holiday periods allow for more substantial upgrades.
Passengers planning to travel are being urged to check their journeys in advance, as some services will be impacted by engineering works.
Key projects during the Early May Bank Holiday (3–5 May) include:
London Euston and Milton Keynes Central: No trains will run to or from these stations on Sunday 4 and Monday 5 May due to embankment repairs, track renewal, and drainage upgrades.
London Victoria: Extensive track renewals, re-signalling, and maintenance work at Battersea will close platforms 1-8. No Southeastern services will run to or from London Victoria between Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 May, with services diverted via London Bridge or London Cannon Street. Gatwick Express and Southern services to Brighton will operate on a reduced timetable.
Cambridge and Audley End: No rail services will operate between Cambridge and Audley End from Saturday 3 to Monday 5 May to allow for new signalling installation ahead of the opening of Cambridge South station in 2026. Rail replacement buses will serve affected routes, including connections to Stansted Airport.
During the Late May Bank Holiday (24–26 May), major works include:
London St Pancras International and Bedford: Overhead line upgrades will suspend train services between London St Pancras and Bedford on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 May. East Midlands Railway services will start and end at Bedford, while Thameslink services will operate from St Albans and Harpenden.
Nuneaton and Stafford: Structures work, HS2 construction, and earthworks will affect services from Saturday 24 to Friday 30 May, with a reduced timetable in place for Avanti West Coast, West Midlands Trains, and CrossCountry. Rail replacement buses will operate on affected routes.
