Aston Villa Unveils Plans To Expand North Stand

Construction News Image
Aston Villa Football Club has unveiled plans to refurbish and expand the iconic North Stand at Villa Park, a major step in the wider regeneration of the North Grounds.

The redevelopment will raise the stadium's total capacity to over 50,000, with the North Stand alone increasing to more than 12,000 seats. Completion is scheduled for the second half of 2027, just in time for UEFA EURO 2028, where Villa Park will serve as a host venue.

Central to the project is a sustainable approach: the club will adapt and reuse the existing North Stand structure, avoiding any reduction in capacity during construction. This innovative strategy ensures minimal disruption for fans and enables Aston Villa to continue delivering a top-tier matchday experience throughout the renovation.

Originally proposed in 2022 as a full rebuild, the expansion has evolved to integrate a modernised design that retains the existing structure. The plan aligns with Aston Villa’s longstanding commitment to match stadium growth with improvements to local infrastructure.

A key enabler for the redevelopment is Mayor Richard Parker's pledge to rebuild Witton Station. His manifesto includes enhancements such as larger queuing areas, a new footbridge, and higher-capacity trains, doubling the station's matchday passenger handling from 5,000 to 10,000. This development is crucial for the project to proceed and maintain Villa Park's role as a EURO 2028 host venue.

Executive Chairman Nassef Sawiris said: "Since Wes and I became owners of this storied Club in 2018 and Atairos joined us as partners in 2024, we have shared a clear ambition: to restore Aston Villa to its rightful position competing at the highest levels of English and European football, and to transform the Club into a global brand and European powerhouse. Thanks to the Mayor’s commitment to develop Witton Station and to improve local transport links, this project will mark an important milestone in the Club’s journey to becoming a world-class sports and entertainment venue. A bigger, better North Stand will not only allow many more Villans to see their team in person, improving matchday experience, but will also dramatically improve the Club's ability to invest and compete in the long term."

The redevelopment is also expected to deliver a major economic boost, contributing £120 million annually to the local economy, supporting over 1,700 full-time equivalent jobs, and drawing more than 1.1 million visitors to Villa Park each year.
