Community Invited To Fourth Public Information Event On £20m Greek Street Bridge Rebuild

Construction News Image
Local residents are being invited to attend a fourth public information event as preparations continue for the complete replacement of the Greek Street bridge.

The event will take place on Tuesday 29 April 2025, from 4pm to 7pm at Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School in Edgeley, Stockport. It offers residents the opportunity to meet the project team, learn more about the upcoming work, and ask any questions they may have.

The Greek Street bridge, originally built in 1958, is being replaced as it has reached the end of its operational life. The £20 million project will improve safety for both road users and pedestrians above the bridge and rail passengers below.

Since 31 March 2025, the bridge and nearby roads have been closed to allow for essential preliminary work. Over the Easter Bank Holiday, the railway through Stockport was also closed to facilitate key tasks in preparation for the bridge's full removal and replacement this August.

Olivia Boland, Network Rail sponsor, said: "It has been fantastic to meet so many of the local community over the past months as we carefully planned the closure of the Greek Street roundabout. I hope to see familiar and new faces at our next event on 29 April at Our Lady's Catholic Primary School.

"Since our last meeting, we've closed the roads and started work under the bridge over the Easter Bank Holiday.

"Between now and August, we'll be working closely with utility companies to take their essential services out of the bridge and into the temporary scaffold bridge. Once that is complete, we will be preparing for the main work in August, where we will demolish and rebuild the bridge over 21 days.

"I'd like to thank everyone in the local community for their cooperation and patience during this work."

During Easter weekend, Network Rail and contractor Murphy completed a number of critical tasks, including the assessment and mapping of overhead lines, demolition of parapets and wing walls, removal of concrete blockwork, and test drilling to prepare for the upcoming bridge removal.

The main bridge replacement is scheduled to take place over a 21-day period in August, during which time no train services will run through Stockport. Network Rail will announce alternative travel options for passengers as the date approaches and is urging travellers to plan ahead.
