Persimmon Homes Secures Approval For 162-Home Development

Construction News Image
Plans for a major new residential development in Castle Cary have been given the green light, as Persimmon Homes Severn Valley secured approval from Somerset Council's South Area Planning Committee.

The scheme will see the delivery of 162 new homes, with 35 per cent designated as affordable housing to help address local demand. These affordable units will be offered through a mix of affordable rent and shared ownership, in partnership with a local housing association.

Designed with sustainability in mind, the homes will be built to high energy-efficiency standards using timber-frame construction. Many will feature solar panels and electric vehicle charging points, supporting the transition to low-carbon living.

The development layout also includes a local equipped area for play, generous public open space, and dedicated pedestrian and cycle routes, all aimed at promoting active travel and enhancing community connectivity.

A strong emphasis on biodiversity is central to the project, with plans for new hedgerows, woodland planting, and sustainable drainage systems to manage surface water. Bird and bat boxes will also be installed to support local wildlife habitats.

The scheme has been carefully designed to blend with the surrounding landscape, ensuring it complements the natural environment and the character of Castle Cary.

As part of a Section 106 agreement, Persimmon will safeguard land for a future primary school, and provide financial contributions towards local education, recreation, and leisure facilities. In addition, two hectares of land are being allocated for future employment use, helping to support long-term job creation in the area.
