Holcim UK Expands Renewable Energy Rollout

Construction News Image
Holcim UK has taken another significant step toward its net-zero ambitions with the installation of a new solar panel system at its Callow Plant near Cheddar, Somerset.

The latest phase of the building materials giant's renewable energy programme has seen 464 solar panels fitted to the rooftops of the site's block factories. The Callow Plant, which hosts a hard rock aggregate quarry, readymix concrete plant, and building products blocks factory, is now generating over 167,000 kWh of clean energy per year — enough to supply eight per cent of the site’s annual electricity demand and cut 15.6 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.

The solar project was developed by Burton-based Regenerco, with the installation carried out by Aniron, and forms part of Holcim UK's wider strategy to reduce its carbon footprint and transition toward fully renewable energy across its operations. The company has already introduced rooftop solar installations at its Huland Ward and Bardon Hill sites in the past year.

Luke Olly, Head of Decarbonisation at Holcim UK, said: "We welcome the latest solar installation at one of our UK sites, the first as Holcim UK, and to maintain the momentum that has been created.

"Renewable energy is one of the key components of our net-zero strategy and the more schemes we introduce the more clean energy we can produce, lowering carbon emissions and making our sites more self-sufficient.

"We are already working on a number of further schemes in the pipeline for the rest of 2025 as we continue our journey to net-zero."
