New-Look Mumbles Prom Takes Shape With Unique Features And Easter Opening

Construction News Image
Visitors to Mumbles over the Easter holidays can now enjoy the transformed promenade, as major upgrades under the Mumbles Coastal Protection Project near completion.

Contractors have begun laying a durable buff-coloured top surface, replacing the previously installed black Tarmac. The fresh finish will eventually stretch from Mumtaz to Verdi's, enhancing the durability for heavy footfall from pedestrians and cyclists.

As part of the design, two sets of sleek aluminium strips are being embedded flush into the new surface. These lines pay homage to the historic Mumbles Railway, which once ran along the coast before its closure in 1960 by the former South Wales Transport Company. The strips are being positioned near the former station locations at Southend and Oystermouth Square.

The improvements form part of the wider Mumbles Coastal Protection Project, led by Swansea Council and primarily funded by the Welsh Government. The scheme aims to safeguard the coastal community from the long-term effects of climate change.

Council Cabinet Member Andrew Stevens said: "Mumbles is for everybody - and it's fantastic to see its new-look prom coming together nicely.

"I thank the local traders, other organisations and residents for their understanding as the end of work on this major project starts to come within sight."

Alongside the new surfacing, the prom is being brightened with Mumbles-themed public art, freshly planted trees, shrubs, and modern lampposts. Still to come are further landscaping elements and the remodelling of two existing slipways.
