£6m Accessibility Upgrade Complete At Herne Bay Station

A £6 million project to improve accessibility at Herne Bay station has been completed, delivering two new lifts and a modern footbridge to make travel easier for all passengers.

Delivered in partnership with the Department for Transport's 'Access for All' programme, the upgrades aim to support passengers with mobility needs, wheelchair users, families with pushchairs, cyclists, and those carrying heavy luggage by providing step-free access to both platforms.

Work began at the end of November 2023 and concluded in March 2025. The improvements include two new 16-person lifts, connecting the main entrance with each platform and offering a seamless, step-free route across the station. The existing subway has also been retained and remains accessible to passengers.

Importantly, the station remained fully operational throughout the construction period, ensuring uninterrupted access for commuters and travellers.

Final testing on the lifts has now been completed and the new facilities are officially open for use.

David Davidson, Network Rail's Kent Route Director, welcomed the milestone, said: "I'm delighted that we've been able to open our latest Access for All scheme at Herne Bay which will provide step-free access to those in wheelchairs, or with pushchairs or heavy luggage to be able to reach their trains.

"We want our railway to be as inclusive as possible and Access for All is opening up travel by rail to more and more people. Herne Bay is just the latest station to be completed with more to come across our network over the next few years. Work has also started on a major scheme at Hither Green, and another project at Shortlands is set to be completed in the coming weeks."
