Equans has successfully completed a significant infrastructure upgrade at the Leeds Generating Station Complex (GSC), a key facility supporting both the University of Leeds and Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
The transformative project is set to deliver increased resilience, improved efficiency, and guaranteed annual energy savings of approximately £3 million.
The wide-ranging upgrade — which included the installation of advanced boilers, chillers, water systems, and digital monitoring solutions — enhances the reliability and sustainability of essential services across both education and healthcare facilities. The improvements are expected to ensure long-term operational performance while aligning with the University and NHS Trust’s net-zero commitments.
Among the key upgrades delivered:
• 55MW boiler enhancements to ensure consistent heating and hot water across multiple buildings.
• Water plant improvements capable of distributing 200,000 litres daily, boosting resilience.
• Replacement of four 3.34MW chillers to provide reliable cooling for patient comfort and medical equipment.
• Upgraded digital systems offering enhanced remote monitoring and operational control.
• New generators, CHP engines, and a high-voltage distribution board to optimise energy efficiency and reduce costs.
• Repairs to a 40-year-old roof, securing the infrastructure’s long-term viability.
The complex upgrade was delivered with minimal disruption, allowing healthcare services and academic operations to continue without interruption.
Craige Richardson, Executive Director of Estates & Facilities at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, praised the impact of the project, said: "Ensuring the resilience and efficiency of our critical infrastructure is essential to delivering high-quality patient care. The upgrades at Leeds GSC have further strengthened our ability to provide reliable heating, cooling, and essential services across our estate, while also delivering substantial energy savings. This project enhances our approach to sustainability and operational excellence and reinforces our commitment to both patient well-being and long-term environmental responsibility."
Geraint Jones, Director for Embedded Energy at Equans UK & Ireland, also highlighted the collaborative nature of the project: "This project demonstrates the power of collaboration in driving progress for critical infrastructure. By integrating cutting-edge technologies and prioritising operational resilience, we have not only future-proofed the site but also delivered tangible benefits for both the University of Leeds and Leeds General Infirmary. With sustainability at the core of our approach, these upgrades mark a significant step forward in reducing energy costs and environmental impact while ensuring continuity of services that communities rely on."
