McLaren Construction Midlands and North has officially announced its role in delivering the highly anticipated Birmingham England Temple for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The project commenced with a ceremonial groundbreaking, attended by over 300 guests and live-streamed globally on YouTube, highlighting the international significance of the scheme.
The development involves the demolition of an existing administrative building to make way for a new Temple and an ancillary accommodation block that will include office space and living quarters. McLaren will also oversee the renovation of the existing meeting house and extensive landscaping, including the planting of mature trees to enhance the surrounding environment.
The Temple will be constructed with a stone façade and feature a striking 38-metre-high central spire, designed to showcase exceptional craftsmanship. Adjacent to the Temple, a two-storey accommodation block will be built using a steel frame and brick exterior, complemented by bespoke stone detailing.
In addition to construction, McLaren will install new electrical, mechanical, and support systems including water supply, fire protection, and state-of-the-art security infrastructure, ensuring the site meets the highest operational standards.
The complexity of the project presents several logistical challenges. Located in a predominantly residential area, the site demands careful planning to minimise disruption to the local community. A new entrance from Penns Lane will require the diversion of multiple underground services, and the use of a specific shade of limestone sourced from Portugal has been mandated to ensure design consistency with Temples worldwide.
One of the project's most unique elements, the 38-metre spire, will be built directly beneath Birmingham Airport's flight path, requiring meticulous coordination with aviation authorities to meet strict safety regulations.
Designed with sustainability in mind, the development is targeting a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating. The Temple will incorporate bespoke design features throughout, including intricately carved stone façades, custom joinery, and architectural lighting.
