Network Rail has reopened a railway crossing at Vernatts Drain in Lincolnshire, using cutting-edge technology to ensure safer crossings for pedestrians and cyclists.

The crossing, which had been temporarily closed during the construction of the Spalding Western Relief Road, has now been upgraded with an advanced safety system ahead of its reopening on Monday, 31 March. The bypass bridge meant that the old whistle board system, which instructed train drivers to give a warning on approach, could no longer be relied upon due to the high road noise.

As part of a £250,000 investment, Network Rail has installed a new Vamos overlay system at Vernatts Drain. This system provides both audible and visual signals to warn users of approaching trains. An audible alarm sounds, and red/green lights indicate when it is safe to cross.

Vinny Briggs, Network Rail route level crossing manager, explained: "We had to come up with an alternative solution to what was there before, and decided to use a Vamos overlay system, which uses sound and red and green lights to give the warnings to pedestrians when a train is approaching.

"We also reconfigured the crossing, with new approaches, fencing and gates, and a telephone in case of emergency.

"By investing in new technology, we have mitigated the identified risks and improved the safety for the public if the crossing is used as instructed."
