Rail passengers traveling across the Pennines over the Easter weekend are being urged to plan ahead as major upgrade work between Huddersfield and Dewsbury is set to impact train services from Saturday 19 to Monday 21 April.
As part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU), engineers will be carrying out significant improvements, with diversionary routes, amended timetables, and rail replacement buses in operation to keep passengers moving.
Mirfield Station Closures and Disruptions
Due to extensive work in Mirfield, Station Road will be closed throughout the Easter weekend, meaning passengers will face a longer walk than usual to reach rail replacement bus stops on Huddersfield Road. Additionally, Saturday night closures of Station Road will continue in the lead-up to Easter.
While pedestrian access will remain available during station operating hours, travelers are advised to check ahead for any changes. Access to Lidl and the Navigation Tavern will remain open at all times.
The work at Mirfield is part of a major station upgrade that will increase the number of railway lines from three to four, allowing for more frequent train services. The project will also introduce:
• Step-free access via a new footbridge with lifts
• A new station entrance concourse with lift access from Station Road to platform level
• An upgraded station car park, featuring blue badge spaces and improved cycle parking
Meanwhile, TRU engineers will also carry out track renewals and signal testing along the route between Huddersfield and Dewsbury.
Call for Passenger Awareness
Andrew Campbell, Sponsor for TRU, said: "We're aware that disruption isn't ideal, so we would like to thank the people of Mirfield and beyond for their understanding as we continue our progress in delivering major upgrades to the station.
"By the end of 2025, Mirfield station will have modernised facilities with faster, more frequent trains able to stop there in the future, meaning improved journeys across the North.
"Please plan any journeys ahead of time, as both the station and Station Road will be closed. Engineering work elsewhere on the route will also impact services across the Pennines."
